As the UK gears up to potentially spend more time at home over the next few months due to Coronavirus, we looked at which characters off the telly people would most like to have as housemates to share in their hijinks and misadventures.
The premise of having to spend more time indoors had people reflect on who they’d want to have as their potential self-isolation pal, as well as someone who’d bring their own brand of benefits to a shared house.
Rachel tops the list but what were the actual results from the study?
|TV Character||TV Show||Votes (%)|
|Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston)||Friends||7.1%|
|Penny Hofstadter (Kaley Cuoco)||The Big Bang Theory||5.5%|
|Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar)||Buffy the Vampire Slayer||4.4%|
|Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy)||The Peaky Blinders||4.1%|
|Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke)||The Game of Thrones||3.9%|
|John Luther (Idris Elba)||Luther||3.7%|
|Nessa Jenkins (Ruth Jones)||Gavin and Stacey||3.3%|
|Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel)||Gilmore Girls||3.1%|
|David Brent (Ricky Gervais)||The Office||2.7%|
|Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg)||Brooklyn Nine Nine||2.6%|
Coming in at the top was Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel Green, showing the Friends star remains as popular as ever and that her credentials as a flatmate are pretty well recognised.
By the end of the series, she’d lived with every other main character on the show except Chandler, showing that she can adapt to living with a wide range of people and bring her textbook style and flair to any shared flat or house.
Rounding out the top 3 characters are Penny (5.5%) and Buffy (4.4%), both very practical ladies to have around the house.
With Penny keeping the Big Bang boys out of trouble and Buffy staving away vampires and other creatures of the night, it’s understandable that people would find them to be very capable housemates who’d pull their weight in a crisis whilst also being pretty fun people to have around.
Despite their gruff demeanours, both Tommy Shelby (4.1%) and John Luther (3.7%) came in quite high on the list of characters.
Tommy and Luther have sterling reputations for being able to pull through in a pinch and get the job done, so we’d imagine they’d be pretty handy if the sink wasn’t draining or shower stopped working. Plus, everyone in the shared house would listen to what they say – so no passive aggressive Post-it notes needed.
The Khalessi herself Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen (3.9%) – First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons – makes an appearance at number 5 on the list of most wanted housemates, although keeping her dragons in the garden might result in a lost deposit.
At number 8 is Rory Gilmore (3.1%) from Gilmore Girls, who would likely be a similar type of housemate to Rachel, bringing a thoughtful, caring energy to the flat which is the sort of vibe you’d probably want when you’re stuck at home. But Rory’s mum Lorelai probably wouldn’t be far away, either constantly ringing and interrupting your film nights or ‘just dropping by’ the flat with some gossip, potentially ruining the good vibes.
Nessa (3.3%), David Brent (2.7%) and Jake Peralta (2.6%) would no doubt bring some banter as they finish off our top 10, so if that’s your cup of tea then sharing a house with these three might be your dream living situation. After a few of David’s awful joke attempts, Nessa’s dry remarks and Jake’s risky antics, you’d likely start looking at self-isolating elsewhere..
The one key takeaway from all this is that we seem to prefer the stars of drama and comedy series quite substantially. This makes sense as i’m sure the majority of people would prefer to have as much fun as possible while self isolating rather than sitting around with just their thoughts pondering on how things could get worse!
Characters bringing a useful skillset or a bit of a laugh dominate the top ten so it’s unsurprising that characters Phil Mitchell (serious hot head) & Dexter Morgan (crazy sociopath) didn’t make the list.
If this has piqued your interest and you’re curious which members of the royal family people would favour living with, then take a look at our other housemate survey.
